Not every reindeer visit needs a sleigh ride. In summer there is no snow for one, and in winter some travellers mainly want to feed the animals and hear how a farm works. This page covers both: the summer farm visit without a sled, and the winter farm visits where a short ride of 400–500 m is part of the programme.

The summer visit: feeding without a sled

Wonderlapland’s summer farm visit is about the animals: you meet the herd and feed the reindeer, and there is no sleigh ride. It is the option for the months without snow, and a calmer way to spend time with the reindeer for anyone who is not set on riding.

Farms around Rovaniemi also receive visitors in summer and autumn, between the sleigh seasons. The bookable visit on this page is a summer visit; the listing shows the dates on which it runs.

Winter: a farm visit with a short ride

In winter, the farm visits with a 400–500 m ride combine time with the herd (feeding, photos, an explanation of how the farm works) with a few minutes on the sled. Reviewers of these visits describe the ride as short, about five minutes; if the ride matters most to you, look at the safaris of 1.5 to 3 km instead.

Two things to know about the short winter visits:

  • The ride depends on snow. Wonderlapland’s listing states that the 400 m ride only runs when there is enough snow and that there is no refund if it cannot take place. A review from May describes such a visit: no ride, and a shorter programme overall.
  • Busy farms. A December reviewer of the same visit counted groups from several other organisations at the farm at the same time, which made for a large group.

Between the seasons

Sleigh rides start once there is enough snow, usually from around mid-November, and end in early or mid-April. In the weeks around those dates a winter tour can turn into a feeding visit anyway. If you travel then, a visit built around feeding avoids the disappointment of a ride that does not happen. More on the best time page.

Farm visit with a short 400 m sleigh ride

★ 4.6 (416 reviews)

“Great experience, petting and feeding reindeers with a quick ride on the sladge (400 mt) with a bit of explanation on the farm and animals, hot tea or coffee and homemade biscuits.”
Vittorio · Italy · December 2025
Critical review
“… Since there was no more snow, we couldn't go on a sleigh ride. Instead of 2.5 hours, the event lasted only 1.5 hours with transportation. …”
Verified traveller · Germany · May 2026 · translated review
Critical review
“… there were 10 different groups from other organizations, so the group was literally 50 people. … You only ride one 400m lap or so with one reindeer …”
Verified traveller · Belgium · December 2025 · translated review

Praise goes to petting and feeding the reindeer, the explanations about the farm and the hot drinks with homemade biscuits. Critical reviewers mention the price, a ride of a single lap, a farm shared with groups from other operators and, once the snow had gone, a visit without any sleigh ride. The listing states that the ride depends on the snow and that there is no refund if it cannot run.

Reindeer farm visit with a 500 m sleigh ride

★ 4.2 (1,584 reviews)

“Very nice activity, 500m with the sleigh was more than enough, very good value for the money and all the people there were very nice. … We got our reindeer driving licences, loved it. We fed the reindeers, made a lot of photos, learnt about the lives of reindeer.”
Ioana · Cyprus · December 2025
Critical review
“It's nice to see the reindeer, but that's about it. The activity is very expensive for what it is… The reindeer ride lasts less than 5 minutes. …”
Verified traveller · France · March 2026 · translated review

Reviewers who enjoyed this visit mention the staff, feeding the reindeer and the driving licence souvenir. The critical reviews centre on the length of the ride and the price for what is a short ride. A review from April describes the end of the season: too warm, most reindeer already released, and a few kept back to pull sleds around a sandy track. If you travel late in the season, weigh that before booking.

Reviews collected from the tours' booking pages. Shortened for length (marked with …), wording unchanged; names reduced to first name and country.
